TenPages.com is a revolutionary online platform that allows the public (and not the publisher or the agent) to decide on the publication of aspiring writers by investing in their manuscripts, and (thus) sharing in book sales revenues.
On a rainy September afternoon in 2008, Valentine van der Lande got the idea for TenPages.com. She wanted to solve the problem that many aspiring writers experience: sending your manuscript to a publisher by traditional mail, waiting months for an answer and finally be turned down. Whether the rejection is deserved or not, even many nowadays broadly popular writers encountered serious difficulties at finding a publisher. Writers like J.K. Rowling, Gabriel Gárcia Márquez and Tolkien searched for a publisher for years.
The company was founded in July 2009 and the website launched in February 2010 as the first professional crowdfunding platform in the worldwide book publishing industry. The launch generated extensive media coverage in The Netherlands and the website rapidly became popular amongst Dutch writers and readers. Nowadays, it is one of the most popular ways of debuting as a starting writer in The Netherlands and some well-known writers like the (anonymous) Zo Zuidas-girls and Fleur Brockhus (De urenfabriek) were once discovered on TenPages.com.

1. Upload manuscript
The aspiring writer uploads a minimum of ten pages of his manuscript (along with some relevant information such as the storyline of the eventual book) onto the TenPages.com.
2. Buy/sell shares
The public can invest in the uploaded manuscripts they like by buying € 5,- ‘shares’. By doing so they facilitate publication, and will share in potential future book sales.
3. Publish the book
When a manuscript has sold 2,000 shares, it will be published as a book. The publishing - editing, lay-out & printing of the book - is executed by one of the TenPages.com partners.
4. Sell the book
Published books will be sold at common retailing channels. Book sales revenues are split amongst bookstore, publisher, writer, TenPages.com and shareholders.
